The Olympic Torch Relay arrived in Blaine Lake at 10:57 a.m. January 12 and spurred a mix of emotions that will live in the residents’ and students’ hearts forever. The interdenominational and multicultural celebration was an excellent display of unity and fellowship. The morning was full of music, song, videos and an abundance of energy. Blaine Lake residents were very patriotic as they wore red and white, carried Canada and Olympic flags and chanted ‘Eh, Oh Canada Go!’
The momentum and energy built up once the torch entered the community. Sirens, flashing lights, music and the high level of energy emitted created a level of excitement that was captured on the faces of many. The Olympic Relay is a symbol of peace, brotherhood and friendship which was clearly evident in Blaine Lake. The Olympic Torch relay team was officially greeted with the traditional Ukrainian and Russian welcome of bread, salt and water with community members in ethnic costume. The First Nations people were a vital part of the program with their traditional dance performances.
Having the Olympic Torch Relay visit and tour our community of Blaine Lake inspired many and, somehow, brought a sense of peace and unity among the cultures and people.
