Caronport

A Sense of Thrill and Excitement

By Dan Buck
It was another of those once-in-a-lifetime events. The Olympic Torch came to our home town of Caronport. It is something you read about in newspapers happening somewhere else, but now it really happened right here.

On a beautiful sunny January Sunday afternoon, over 800 community members lined the streets to cheer the arrival of the Olympic Torch. The Torch bearers were amazed to see so many people waving flags, generously given out to the crowd by RBC and Coca-Cola, in support of them and the Torch as they ran up Centre Street. Then all the voices slowly blended into one as the singing of our national anthem was led out by Heidi Schulz on her trumpet. As the torch bearer ignited the flame for the next runner a huge crowd of kids ran after the flame, excited to be part of this memorable moment.

The sense of thrill and excitement continued to linger in the crowd as they visited on the streets and celebrated the hopes and future of Canada’s Olympians over a cup of hot chocolate.
