Warm temperatures, warm hearts and a warm welcome greeted the Olympic Torch when it stopped off at Hafford today on its way to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Students from Hafford Central School, who participated in a day-long “mini-Olympics”, lined the Town’s Main Street to watch the relay, along with students from Maymont School (30 km south of the torch’s route) who had been invited to join in the torch run event and a hotdog lunch donated by local businesses.
Hafford town councilor, Mary Linnell, co-chair of the community preparations for the relay event, greeted runners Pat Stewart (Nipawin), Bonnie Bond (Saskatoon) and Nicole Larocque, both of whom had travelled a good distance to join the community and who took time to share their experience and have pictures taken with the torch and local residents.
“Today is a fun and special day,” said Linnell. “Any time we can have our part of the world - and young people especially - share in celebrating athletic excellence and Canada as a nation, it is indeed a special time!”
